Ghent

Ghent is one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium. Founded at the confluence of the rivers the Schelde and the Leie, it became one of the larges cities of northern Europe in the late Middle Ages. It has a port and houses a top 100 university, Ghent University. The people of Ghent, also known as the “stroppendragers”, are known to be stubborn but warm and kind :-)

Visa

Belgium is a member of the European Union and part of the Schengen area. Please check if need a visa to enter Belgium. In case you do, please apply as soon as possible: we have lost a few students already in previous years because of visa issues :-(

Travel

Brussels National Airport

Ghent is only 60 minutes from the international airport of Zaventem “Brussels Airport”, where flights to more than 70 destinations. There are two direct trains per hour between the airport railway station (Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven) and the railway station, Ghent-Sint-Pieters (Gent Sint-Pieters station). In the airport, follow the signs to the railway station. Buy a ticket for Ghent-Sint-Pieters station at the counter in the train station of the airport or online. Booking online avoids long ques at the ticketing counters. Apart from direct trains to Ghent, you can take the shuttle train to Brussels Central Station from the airport (4 trains in each hour). Charleroi Brussels South Airport

There are two options for traveling between Charleroi (Brussels South) Airport and Ghent:

By High-Speed Train

The closest international railway station for high-speed trains is Brussels South (Bruxelles Midi) railway station (arrival of Thalys, TGV, Eurostar, ICE, etc.).

Regular connections by train to Ghent-Sint-Pieters railway station are available (approximately 2-3 trains per hour) with a journey time of approximately 30 minutes. Train schedules.

By International Bus

If you’re planning to travel by bus or coach, you can checkout Eurolines or Flixbus, which run coach services to many destinations in Europe. Ghent is one of them. The Eurolines bus stops at Koningin Elisabethlaan 73, which is near the Ghent Sint-Pieters train station. The Flixbus bus stops at Kasteellaan 363, close to the Ghent Dampoort train station.

Getting to the accommodation

From the train station Ghent Sint Pieters

You can take one of the buses with line number 34, 35, 55, 58, 70, 71, 72, 76, 77 or 78 in the direction of Gent Heuvelpoort (you can always ask the driver for information). The fourth stop is “Heuvelpoort” where you get off the bus, you walk through the “Overpoortstraat” (a street with a lot of bars) and after the Albert Heijn you turn right. The accommodation is in this street. You can also take the same route walking through the beautiful Citadel park.

From the train station Gent Dampoort (Flixbus)

The buses stop close to the train station. This is the route to take by bus on google maps. From the parking you cross the street by using the pedestrian crossing on your right. At the other side of the street is a bus stop “Veemarkt”. Take bus 34, 35, 70, 71, 76, 77 or 78 and get off at the 8th stop “Heuvelpoort”. Walk through the “Overpoortstraat” (a street with a lot of bars) and after the Albert Heijn you turn right. The accommodation is in this street. It is also possible to walk this route. It's a 30min walk and you cross a variety of neighborhoods.

Accommodation

We have arranged accommodation for all students in single rooms at the local university accommodation. There will be no costs for participants thanks to our sponsors. The rooms cost 265€ for the whole week and will have to be paid on the last day. The rooms have been booked with check-in on Sunday 30 August and check-out on Sunday 6 September. All single rooms have a private bathroom and refrigerator, the kitchen is shared. Some pictures of the rooms can be found here. The rooms are located within walking distance of the venue for the classes at the site Kantienberg, (Stahlhof 43, 47, 49, 51).

Venue

Classes will take place at Monasterium PoortAckere, which is a 15 minute walk from the accommodation.
